Blue Whale Media Charity Work in November
This month the Blue Whale Media team are taking part in a few charity events, I will be taking part in all of them this month as there is no physical exercise involved for once. David, Sam, Matthew and I are taking part in Movember with the intention of raising £200 towards male prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.
As well as this, Joe, Ben, Matthew, Lewis and I are doing the Veg Pledge for November, meaning we are all vegetarian for a month. This is to raise money for Cancer Research and we have set a goal of £400 which we are doing really well on at the moment.
What is Movember?
The leading charity changing the face of men’s health. We’re addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
‘We know what works for men, and how to find and fund the most innovative research to have both a global and local impact. We’re independent of government funding, so we can challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works. In 15 years, we’ve funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world.
By 2030 we’ll reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.’
To put simply, Movember just means that you cannot shave your facial hair from the 1st of November until the 1st December.
How Am I Finding Movember?
Being cursed with the natural beard anyway, Movember is going rather smoothly for me up to now, it gets a little itchy sometimes and my girlfriend doesn’t really like the length of it but, I enjoy its size and it keeps me warm.
What is The Veg Pledge?
The Veg Pledge is something organised by Cancer Research to try and encourage people to challenge themselves and not eat meat or fish for 30 days. They argue there are many benefits to this but one of the main ones it to decrease the risk of bowel cancer. Another positive thing about it is that it is less expensive to buy and less harmful to the environment to make.
How Am I Finding the Veg Pledge?
The Veg Pledge has been quite a hard one for me as I like to eat, and the meat was extremely difficult to cut out of my diet. It’s especially difficult when your colleagues, parents and girlfriend all like to taunt you and eat chicken and steak directly in front of you.
My Ideas for After the Month
I think it would be a good idea to do a 360 portrait of our faces with our beards/moustaches before and after we shave, I think this would look really good on social media platforms.
I also think that we could take a picture of our first meal back from our Veg Pledge to say we completed the task together.
