Moving from Education to the real world

Everyone always asks you what you want to do when you’re older.
From the age of 5, you’re pushed to answer this question when really all you want to do is run around on a sugar induced hype and play with sand.
When you’re a bit older, you’re asked again and maybe you might even have an answer this time, maybe you’ll say, ‘an artist’ or ‘a teacher’.
But then comes the time when you really have to know what you want to do, what it is you’ll be working towards for the rest of your life…

Journey to University

I never really knew what I wanted to do when I was older, all I knew was that I wanted to create things. I wanted to be writing or using my imagination in some sort of way because that was what I was good at!
The last few months of college you’re expected to either apply for university or have a path planned out ahead of you to follow straight away.
I chose the former and decided that university was the way to go (or an escape from that inevitable question just a little longer…).

I felt that I wanted a change too, something different from my usual ‘TV and Film’ route that I was already used to. I found a university in the midlands that did a Radio Production course, a university that my best friend already went to, a university where everyone is friendly and inspiring… I was sold instantly and no other university I viewed came even close.
Come September and I was off on my brand-new adventure to a new city that was four hours away from my home town.

Realising my path

Three years later and I’m forced to ask myself that same question again – “What do you want to do when you’re older?”
But this time, I had an answer. This time I was ready for my future and I don’t think that I’d have known unless I had gone to university.
After spending the whole three years of university at the student radio station, I found my creativity had peaked once more in the way of writing blog posts for their website about anything I wanted or presenting a radio show with my best friends.

But out of everything, I found that the Social Media/Content Creation path was the one for me.

Discovering Blue Whale Media

All of a sudden, I had finished my course and I was applying for all kinds of different Content Creation jobs. It was then that I came across a job listing at a company called ‘Blue Whale Media’ and the job description screamed out to me. This was a job written for me, I was absolutely sure of it!
After a week, I heard back from them with an invite to an interview and I was ecstatic, everything was falling into place. Although everyone told me not to get too excited (you know, just in case) I couldn’t help but feel that this is where I was meant to be.A few weeks later I was told that I had been offered the job!
So now, when people ask me for the final time, what is it that I want to do when I’m older, I’ll tell them that I want to be working here at Blue Whale Media as a Content Writer and they’ll say – “Cool.”
