One thing that can be very frustrating as a graphic designer is receiving files that have been made using the wrong
programme in the adobe creative suite. The Adobe creative suite has many applications which all excel in different areas. The three primary and most used programmes in the adobe creative suite are Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. These three programmes are where most mistakes happen in terms of using wrong programmes for certain types of work. For example, using Photoshop instead of Adobe Illustrator for the creation of a logo.
Photoshop is one of the most used photo editing programmes in the world. From the name, Photoshop is used for creating and editing photos and raster based work. Photoshop makes use of using pixels for easy manipulation of work. It originally was made to enhance photos but now has developed over time to do so much more. Being part of a web design company, Photoshop is a great way to create web pages and Graphics. It can also be used for banner ads and editing photos which can later be used for print. Because Photoshop is such great renown around the world and because there is so much information about Photoshop, People feel like it is the only tool you need in the creative world.
Illustrator is mainly used for creating vector-based artwork such as Illustrations, Logo Designs, brand marks and other various design elements. The vector-based graphics used in Illustrator are scalable images that can be sized to something as small as an ant to something as big as a bus without losing resolution or clarity. This is why it is great for logo based works as logos will be used for all different matters in a business’s lifetime and therefore will need to be scaled to different sizes. Print design can also be made in illustrator however multi-page documents could have some drawbacks as opposed to working with Adobe InDesign.
Adobe InDesign’s function and purpose are very dead and set in which there should be no confusion of when to use this programme. Its goal is to layout printed materials which could be used for brochures, Newsletters, and magazines. InDesign takes both elements that are created in Photoshop and Illustrator. This is because InDesign doesn’t have the capabilities that Photoshop has. For example, editing photos and raster based images. You can create vector graphics in InDesign, but nowhere near to the level, you can in Illustrator.
Overall Adobe create all these programmes which excel in different areas of design which helps us as designers to create stunning work in the right way. With every application in the Adobe suite, there is so much to learn in each one. It is so complex that you go by the rule that there is always someone that knows more. Thinking about what you need to create with these programmes will help you plan a better workflow and create more professional work.
