VR Headsets Comparison

What do you want from a virtual reality headset? A standalone device? One that’s compatible with your smartphone? A piece of kit that isn’t too heavy on your head? Or one that gives you a totally immersive experience?

Here at Blue Whale Media, the web design company Manchester, we know there are many factors involved in choosing a VR headset. So in this guide, we’ll look at five of the main ones on the market. And we’ll consider the pros and cons to each, to help you make up your mind.

We hope that the following breakdown from our web development agency Manchester gives you helpful insight into this evolving industry.

Oculus Go

Price £199

Pros

  • Due to be launched in June 2018, this is an affordable and accessible headset.
  • A standalone device, meaning that you don’t have to connect it to a smartphone or a PC.
  • A reasonably large content library, with over 1,000 apps, games, movies and experiences available.

Cons

  • According to expert opinion, the virtual reality isn’t quite as good as the Oculus Rift, which is a more expensive tethered VR headset.
  • Can feel heavy on the head, in comparison to some other headsets.

HTC Vive

Price £499

Pros

  • Great room-scale tracking, which allows you to walk around a space that’s 4.5 x 4.5m. This adds to the immersive experience of the VR.
  • Considered to be a forefront of virtual reality innovation
  • Two motion controllers make you really feel you’re part of the action

Cons

  • Two 1080p screens give a clear image, but you can get an even clearer one from the HTC Vive Pro. The latter comes with a 78% increase in dots per inch.
  • You may want to consider buying the pricier HTC Vive Pro instead. It’s an upgrade that came out in 2018.

PlayStation VR

Price £259

Pros

  • It runs on a PS4 console. So it doesn’t require you to have a large (and probably expensive) collection of PC games.
  • It offers an impressive selection of games.
  • A reasonably affordable VR headset choice

Cons

  • Feedback from users suggests that the headset doesn’t always seal out light.
  • Its accessories are sold separately, but you can buy them in bundles that include devices like the PlayStation Camera, for instance.
What About VR Headsets That Are Compatible With Smartphones?

Our web development agency Manchester is keeping a close eye on the VR headsets. So we have to mention two that work in conjunction with smartphones.

Samsung Gear VR

Price: Around £100

Pros:

  • Comes with an impressive motion controller
  • Compatible with numerous Galaxy phones

Cons:

  • Could be replaced by the likes of the Oculus Go, because that shares a game library with the Gear VR.
  • You need a high-end smartphone to get the full benefits of the VR experience.
Google Daydream View

Price: £99

Pros:

  • An affordable option for Android phones.
  • Easy to use. It only requires you to install an app on your phone.

Cons:

  • It’s not as immersive as a PC-powered VR experience
  • Its content has been criticised for not being as compelling as other VR headsets.
