Most developers and testers may not want to hear the word internet explorer. But why is this the case? Most often, your web page may have some differences between browsers since they rely on JavaScript, HTML and CSS. Usually, this may not be on a large scale but may have serious implications which may affect user interactions with the web application. However, despite all these, it has the largest market share; therefore, developers and testers have no choice but to stick by it.
Why is it so problematic, and why is it still popular?
To answer this question, let’s first have a look at its history to understand better when the problems started. In the old days, Netscape was the first browser in the market that ran the show. By then, Internet Explorer was free and was available on windows. At this time, Microsoft was an internet giant and had the financial muscles to implement new tools and capabilities such as CSS and script support. In 2003, Internet Explorer was the most popular browser and held 96% market share. Other browsers were trying to make a name such as Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
Non-compliance
Microsoft did not abide by the rules of World Wide Web Consortium or the W3C that gives unique DOM and HTML properties that browsers must follow. Instead, they made their own decisions in regards to features as well as plugins. While all the other browsers were following regulations laid down, internet explorer decided to play a wild card. Users were split between the different browsers and internet explorer, and the developers attempted to come up write applications that were standards compliant. Microsoft Edge
With time, people ran away from the other browsers, but this was short-lived as could not release new updates or developments. Modern browsers came and were more reliable since they focused mostly on speed. Developers could release regular updates and made tremendous improvements. Since there were no updates on the internet explorer for long, it could not blend with Android and iOS systems. Internet Explorer was eventually replaced in 2015 with Microsoft Edge as the new browser.

Currently, Internet Explorer has made improvements, especially in areas where users have paid closer attention. However, since it does not adhere to W3C guideline. It is still a problem for developers as well as testers. Some developers even use it as a default browser although non-compliant is always an underlying issue. It may not create your website as per your requirement, and it may lead to its crushing. Nevertheless, users have been testing new versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
