Jamie's apprenticeship at Blue Whale Media

Jamie’s Apprenticeship at Blue Whale Media

My first step as an Apprentice at Blue Whale Media takes us all the way back to June of 2018.

It was the joint hottest summer on record and the whole country was gripped by England’s surprising success at the World Cup. Fresh out of Warrington Vale Royal College, I jumped right into full-time employment at Blue Whale Media and enrolled onto a Level 3 Digital Marketing Course with 3aaa.

What I learnt on my Apprenticeship

I learned a range of different skills during my apprenticeship. The Digital Marketing Course itself included a variety of different marketing skills including:

  • Email Marketing
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Search Engine Optimisation
  • GoogleAds/Pay Per Click Marketing

As well as digital marketing, I also learned personal skills and had a better understanding of how a business works. The course introduced me to the idea of stakeholders in a company, setting SMART targets to improve yourself and more. I learned other skills throughout the course which do not directly work into digital marketing, yet I find myself using them in my job almost everyday, such as the principles of coding.

How my Apprenticeship went

Unfortunately, my apprenticeship wasn’t quite as smooth sailing as it probably should’ve been. Everything was great on Blue Whale Media’s side of things. I was always given a whole day every week to complete any coursework I needed to do, I had regular one-to-ones with my line manager to check my progress, and I had plenty of additional online training courses such as the Yoast Academy and Google Ads Academy (now called Skillshop.)

To keep the story short, 3aaa went into liquidation and it took us quite a long time to find a new training provider. We found one just in time for the first COVID lockdown, in which my tutor was let go and the new training provider didn’t bother to tell me about it or assign me a new tutor. Eventually however, I finally managed to complete the course and finish with a Distinction.

I’m very happy with the way my apprenticeship at Blue Whale Media turned out, I’m thankful for all the opportunities and skills it has given me which has resulted in a 4 year long career so far!
