Digital Tachographs

Tachographs are fitted to commercial vehicles to measure the vehicle’s time, distance, and speed to comply with the law of the operators’ licence and VOSA Tachograph rules and regulations. Historically, tachographs were a paper chart record, but all new vehicles now use a digital system, whereby the driver uses their own card inserted into the vehicle unit.

Digital Tachographs store data in their internal memory and on the Driver Card, which is inserted into the Digital Tachograph device. They are used to record the hours of driving, and other work and rest periods, enabling the Driver to plan their route efficiently and economically.

Since the 1st May 2006, digital tachographs by law should be fitted to all commercial road haulage vehicles registered on or after that date.

The importance of digital tachograph technology
Working drivers must comply with the rules and regulations that govern drivers working hours. Digital tachographs make the process of recording activity simpler and more reliable by enabling detailed records of past drives to be recalled quickly.

The biggest difference between the analogue tachograph and the digital tachograph is the use of a smart card instead of the record sheets, often called charts, and discs.
