How To Write A Product Description That Sells

A product description is a concise and clear description that tells your customer enough about the product to make them want it without being too ‘salesy’ or overwhelming.

Product descriptions are often the first impression of a company and its products. The words they use to describe their product can either be a breath of fresh air or an instant turn-off. So, what makes for good product description copy?

Let’s look at some key points to remember when writing your product descriptions:

1. Keep it short and sweet

The average person has a very short attention span, so make sure your product descriptions are to the point. Keeping it at around 150-200 words is ideal. For example, if you are selling a dress, include the key features such as the neckline, silhouette, and fabric.

2. Use persuasive language

Your job is to sell the product, so use language that will persuade your customers to buy it. This will vary depending on your target audience, but some persuasive words and phrases like guaranteed, free, instantly, new and improved etc. 

For example, instead of saying ‘the dress is made of 100% cotton’, say ‘the dress is made of luxurious 100% cotton that will feel soft and comfortable against your skin’.

3. Highlight the benefits

Your customer doesn’t care about your product; they care about what your product can do for them. So make sure to highlight the benefits along with the features. 

Customers want to know what’s in it for them, so tell them! Don’t use general terms when describing your product. Be specific about the features and benefits so that your customer knows exactly what they are getting.

For example, instead of saying ‘the dress has a V-neckline, say ‘the dress has a V-neckline that will accentuate your curves and make you look and feel your best.

4. Use images

People are visual creatures, so using images along with your product descriptions can help give your customers a better idea of what the product looks like and how it can be worn. 

For example, if you are selling a dress, include a photo of the model wearing the dress. This will help show the customer how the dress looks on a person.

5. Use customer reviews

Including customer reviews can be a great way to show your potential customers that other people have had a good experience with your product. It also helps build trust and credibility. For example, if you are selling a dress, include customer reviews with photos of the dress.

6. Use social proof

Social proof is when you use other people’s opinions to persuade your customers to buy your product. For example, if you are selling a dress and you have a lot of good reviews on social media, you can include snippets of those reviews in your product descriptions. This will help show potential customers that your product is popular and people are happy with it.
